<イスラーム暦は、西暦とは異なり、聖預言者ムハンマド様（かれの上に平安あれ）の、マッカ（メッカ）からマディーナへのヒジュラ（聖遷）の年をその紀元元年としている。預言者様のマディーナへの脱出は、イスラーム暦ラビーウルアウワル（三月）の八日であった。このイスラーム 暦の設定は、ヒジュラから十六年たったとき、アリーの進言によって第二代カリフ ウマルの時に採用された。ヒジュラの日は、実際にはラビウールアウワルの八日であったが、一般にはイスラーム暦ムハッラム（一月）一日をイスラーム教徒は元日として祝っている。
イスラーム暦は、地球をまわる月の軌道の周期をもとにしている。このような陰暦の場合1ケ月は、新月の日から次の新月までで、その月によっては太陽暦とは一日半の違いがあり（月の周期の平均は、二十九日と十二時間四十四分）月の運行をもとにし た一ケ月は29日と30日からなっている。したがって、同じ月でも、例えば断食の月ラマダーン（九月）は、年によって29日か30日である。一年は十ニケ月で あるから、陰暦の一年の総日数は、年によって353日、354日または355日である。陰暦の日付は太陽暦とは少しずつずれていき、約32年毎に元に戻るように なっている。イスラーム暦の12ケ月は次のとおりである。

- 第九月 ラマダーン Ramadan

- 第十月 シヤウワール Shawwal
- 第十一月 ズル＝カイダ Dhu’l-Qa’dah
- 第十二月 ズル＝ヒッジャ Dhu’l-Hijja
一日の変わりめは、夜中の十二時ではなく、夕方の日没時とされている。したがって 、たとえばラジャブ（第七月）二十七日の夜は、実は二十六日の日没から二十七日の夜明けまでということになる。
なお、１月ームハッラム、７月ーラジャブ、９月ーラマダーン、１１月ーズー・アル＝カーイダの4つの月は争いの禁じられた聖なる月とされる。
